How to Cook Tasty Barbeque Deer Meat in a Crock Pot

Venison, also known as deer meat, is a very healthy choice—even better for you than pork! That’s right. If you were to compare the nutrition of venison to that of turkey you’d find it has almost identical amounts of cholesterol and fat. Most people think, however, that deer meat tends to taste a bit gamey. So to decrease that flavor, many people like to rub the meat with a bold flavor like garlic or they like to let the meat soak in a marinade overnight. But this main dish recipe also uses a barbeque sauce and we’ll explain how to cook deer meat in a crock pot.
- 2 lbs. venison, leg or rump roast
- 12 oz. beer with robust flavor
- Salt and pepper
- 3 bay leaves
- 2 c. barbeque sauce (any flavor)
- 3 minced cloves of garlic
- 2 sliced onions
- With a butcher knife, cut off as much as you can of the venison fat. This will also aid in reducing the gamey flavor. When you’ve removed as much fat as possible, set the meat aside.
- Using a large bowl, create a marinade by blending together the beer, pepper, salt, onions, garlic and bay leaves. Mix well until salt and pepper have dissolved then place the deer meat into the bowl. Make sure the marinade covers the entire venison. Cover the bowl with a tight-fitting lid or tinfoil.
- Put the bowl into the refrigerator and let the meat marinate for 12-24 hours. Turn the meat over periodically.
- When the marinating time has expired, remove the deer meat and onions from the bowl and place them into a 3 or 4 quart slow cooker. Pour the 2 cups of barbeque sauce onto the onions and meat.
- Place the cover onto the crock pot and let the deer meat cook for 10-12 hours on low or 5-6 hours on high.
- At the end of the cooking time, remove the venison from the crock pot, let it rest for 5 minutes, then slice and serve with the barbeque sauce on the side.
This recipe is delicious and sure to please any hungry family members or guests. If you have leftover deer meat it will be great in sandwiches the next day!
